A shed has raised eyebrows after hitting the Far North Queensland rental market for $260 a week.
Billed as a “large shed and usable land available with power and water connected”, the building in Cooktown boasts a shower and toilet, a lounge, table, TV cabinet, fridge, small gas stove and cooking utensils – all for $260 per week, including power.
However, viral TikToker Rach McQueen, who often calls out ridiculous rentals, said such a price was outrageous.
“Cooktown for anyone who doesn’t know there, north of Cairns, so it’s hot as f*** tropical weather, which means monsoons and the risk of cyclones,” she said.
“And as you can see by this giant f***ing puddle, this looks like a very weather-resistant place to live.
“I’m not going to argue with you that geographically this seems like a nice tranquil place to live in the tropics, but not when this is what you’re living in.”
McQueen gave her followers a virtual tour.
The shed appears to have two open sides, no closed-off room to sleep in apart from a concrete partition, and where precisely the bathroom needs to be apparent.
“As you can see, we’ve got that wooden cabinet, this little tin construction and this bench here,” she explained.
“Okay, so the wooden cabinet and the bench appear to be up here, and I have a feeling that this is the f***ing bathroom.”
A photo on the listing shows just that, with what looks like a shower curtain covering one side.
Rentals in Cooktown are few and far between, with only a handful available both through agents and privately.
More Coverage
The median rent for a house in the town of just over 2600 people is $375 per week.
As is the flavour of the rest of her channel, McQueens said the listing was a bad inditement on the sorry state of renting in Australia.
“I’m very excited to see the landlord lovers tried to justify somebody charging $260 a week for this s*** in Cooktown,” she said.
