The election for the commonwealth’s House of Delegates in Virginia, U.S. saw a Democrat, Susanna Gibson, narrowly losing out to her Republican rival, David Owen, following the leaking of webcam videos of her engagement in intimate activities with her husband for tips.
Gibson, a nurse practitioner, lost to businessman David Owen by fewer than 1,000 votes. The election was highly watched in the commonwealth, as Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin attempted to retain the House of Delegates and flip control in the state senate to enforce a 15-week abortion ban.
Gibson gained attention when it was revealed that she had hosted over a dozen live intimate acts with her husband on the adult streaming website, Chaturbate. Videos of these acts were leaked on the website Recurbate after she announced her candidacy. Despite the controversy, Gibson continued to maintain her Chaturbate profile, and even gained more followers, whom she urged for “tokens” in exchange for private shows, claiming it was for a charitable cause.
Following the release of the videos, Gibson’s fundraising numbers increased, but her support among voters dwindled, with a Cygnal poll showing her trailing behind Owen by 49.5% to 38.9%.
In response to the controversy, Gibson criticized her opponents, labeling the leak as “an illegal invasion of my privacy designed to humiliate me.” She accused her political opponents and their Republican allies of committing a sex crime to attack her and her family. Despite the setback, Gibson vowed to continue fighting for her community.
