Chadwick Boseman was born on November 29, 1977, in Anderson, South Carolina. He was raised in “The Upstate” neighborhood of the city by his parents. Carolyn and Leroy Boseman. Leroy, her father, was a businessman while her mother, Carolyn, worked as a nurse.

Boseman attended TL Hanna High School in his hometown. It was there that his passion for acting and directing came to fruition in the first play he wrote at the start of his freshman year. He graduated from high school in 1995 before traveling to Washington DC to attend Howard University, a historically black institution of higher learning.

Boseman originally planned to be just a writer and director. He said he only studied acting to learn how to communicate better with actors. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Howard University in 2000. After that, he attended the British American Drama Academy in Oxford, England for a summer program and then graduated from Digital Film Academy in New York City before landing his first acting instructor position with the Schomburg Junior Scholars program. During this time, Boseman had minor roles in different television shows, including Third Watch, which was his first role in 2003, Law & OrderCSI: NY, and ER

In 2010, he landed a regular role in another TV series, People Unknown. His breakthrough role, however, came in 2013 in the movie 42, a biopic for baseball pioneer Jackie Robinson, who was the first African-American to play in majors in the 20th century. His performance in the film earned him the title of “Male Star of Tomorrow” by the National Association of Theater Owners in 2014.

Later that year, Boseman starred in another high-profile project, Ride On, a film depicting the personal struggles and successes of music legend James Brown. Previously, he was alongside Kevin Costner in Draft Day where he played an NFL draft draft.

His next role came in 2016 in the film Gods of Egypt, in which he played the god of wisdom, Thoth. That same year, Boseman joined the world of marvel cinema, appearing in the blockbuster Captain America: Civil War T’Challa, King of Wakanda, who is also the Black Panther.

In 2017, he briefly returned to biographical cinema with Marshall, where he played Thurgood Marshall, the first African-American Supreme Court. After that, he continued his role as Black Panther. The film was released in February 2018 to rave reviews. It shattered box office records by grossing an estimated $218 million in the United States alone over the four-day President’s Day weekend.

Later in the year, Boseman will join his other Marvel cohorts; Capt. America, Iron Man, etc. in the movie Avengers: Infinity War
