Facing first-degree murder charges, former NFL player Sergio Brown is scheduled to appear in a Chicago court.
The charges against Brown were formally filed in suburban Maywood on Tuesday, October 24, in connection with his mother’s tragic murder.
Brown is accused of first-degree murder and concealment of a body in relation to his mother’s death.
In September, family members reported that Brown and his mother, Myrtle Brown, had gone missing. The search of their family home led to the discovery of Myrtle Brown’s body in a nearby creek.
According to the Cook County medical examiner’s office, an autopsy revealed that she had sustained multiple injuries from an assault, and her death was determined to be a homicide.
In response to Sergio Brown’s arrest earlier this month, Myrtle Brown’s family issued a statement through their attorney:
“We are also heartened by the news that Sergio Brown has been apprehended and returned to the United States unharmed. Our family is prayerful that, as the investigation progresses, more answers will become available, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking incident,” the statement reads.
Even after being reported missing, Brown posted a video message on his Instagram account, making several allegations about Maywood police and the FBI.
Following a more than two-week stay in Mexico, he was eventually arrested earlier this month in San Diego. Brown was then brought to Maywood where he is expected to appear in court on Wednesday afternoon.
