Lombardo, the youngest in a family of four, moved from Cuba to the USA with his family at the age of two and settled in South Gate, California. He picked up drumming at the age of eight, drawing inspiration from bands like Led Zeppelin and KISS. After graduating from South Gate High School in 1983, he ventured into drumming as a career and eventually crossed paths with Kerry King, who invited him to join Slayer in 1981. It was during this time that Lombardo began crafting his own music, a blend of British heavy metal and American punk rock.

Slayer’s debut album “Show No Mercy” was released in 1983, followed by a series of moderately successful albums during his intermittent association with the band, until Lombardo chose to leave in 1992. Alongside Waldemar Sorychta, Lombardo formed the groove metal band Grip Inc. in 1995. The band released their first album “Power of Inner Strength” (1995) and subsequently issued three more albums. Unfortunately, the band’s vocalist Gus Chambers committed suicide in the autumn of 2008, and the band has been inactive since then.

From 1998, Lombardo became a member of Fantômas, a group that played avant-garde metal music. After their first self-titled album in 1999, the group released four more albums. In 2001, Lombardo reunited with Slayer, and the band recorded the studio album “Christ Illusion” (2006) which topped various music charts. They also released “World Painted Blood” (2009), which also achieved success. However, Lombardo was dismissed from Slayer in February 2013, after which he collaborated with various bands and musicians, including John Zorn and Apocalyptica.

Lombardo’s influence extends to many current drummers such as The Rev from Avenged Sevenfold, Raymond Herrera from ex-Fear Factory, Pete Sandoval from Morbid Angel, and others. He founded the band Dead Cross in 2015 and announced the replacement of the singer Gabe Serbian by Mike Patton at the end of 2016.

In his personal life, Lombardo married Theresa in 1986, with whom he had two children.
