He studied chemical engineering at Stockholm University, while working as a doorman and security guard at a nightclub. He would win a scholarship in mathematics from the Fulbright program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1983. In the United States, he met the model Grace Jones, with whom he began a relationship and who would take him to the movies, in a small role. , in the film 007: In the crosshairs of the murderers (1985). On a trip to Boston, he met producer Warren Robertson, who invited him to audition for a special role. Competing with 5,000 other applicants, Dolph was initially not accepted. But after reviewing his test tape, actor Sylvester Stallone chose him for the role that would give him international fame: Ivan Drago, Soviet boxer in the film Rocky IV (1985). The film was a worldwide success and the character would bring enormous popularity to the actor. In addition to working as a magazine model, Dolph decided to move to Los Angeles to establish an acting career. Between the 80s and 90s, the actor was a medium presence in action cinema, typecast in a role of muscular hero or villain, in films such as Masters of the Universe (1987), Red Scorpion (1988), The Punisher (1989 ), The Mortal Destroyer (1990), Japantown Massacre (1991), Universal Soldier (1993), Johnny Mnemonic (1995), among others. He returned to big projects with the help of Stallone himself, when he invited him to participate in the successful action trilogy, started by The Expendables (2010), which brought together several action film stars of the 80s. In addition to his projects as a director and on television, Lundgren is about to appear in the film Aquaman (2018) and Creed II (2018), reprising his legendary role as Ivan Drago.
