Vincent LO Hong-shui GBS, born in 1948, is the chairman of Shui On Group, a Hong Kong-based building-materials and construction firm. He completed his education at the University of New South Wales, Australia, in 1969. Upon his return to Hong Kong, he commenced his business endeavors with a borrowed sum of HK$100,000 (US$16,700) from his father, a prominent Hong Kong property tycoon. In 1984, Lo initiated his investments in Shanghai and collaborated on building a hotel with the Shanghainese Communist Youth League. However, the Tiananmen Square crisis led to a significant decline in occupancy, and the league failed to repay its construction loan. Lo aided the league in managing the loan, with assistance from Han Zheng, who was the Youth League secretary at that time and is now the mayor of Shanghai. In partnership with Xu Kuangdi, a former Shanghai mayor, Han supported Lo in securing the rights to develop an area surrounding the hall where the Communist Party of China conducted its first meeting, now recognized as Xintiandi. This property development project, worth $170 million, encompasses a 20,000 square meter complex comprising restaurants, bars, and shops, and is a prominent entertainment destination in Shanghai. In 1995, Lo acquired his first cement plant in Chongqing, which enabled the Shui On Group to emerge as one of China’s top three cement companies. Under Lo’s leadership, the Shui On Group is executing property development projects in various Chinese cities, including Wuhan, Dalian, Foshan, Hangzhou, and Chongqing.
