France’s Youngest Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, Appointed

French President Emmanuel Marcon has designated Gabriel Attal, who is 34 years old, as the new prime minister of the country, making him the youngest person to hold this position. Attal is also France’s first openly gay prime minister, as reported by Associated Press.

Attal’s appointment comes as President Macron aims for a fresh start for the remainder of his term, which extends until 2027, as he is constitutionally prohibited from a third consecutive term.

Having joined Macron’s newly established political movement in 2016, Attal served as the government spokesperson from 2020 to 2022, which contributed to his widespread recognition among the French public.

Afterward, he was appointed as the budget minister and then assumed the esteemed position of education minister in July. This significant reshuffling follows his predecessor Elisabeth Borne’s resignation on Monday amid political unrest over an immigration law that enhances the government’s authority to expel foreigners.

Borne’s resignation letter suggested that she stepped down at Macron’s behest, citing the president’s “will” to “appoint a new prime minister.”
