He was born Idrissa Akuna Elba on September 6,1972 to his Sierra Leonean father, Winston, and Ghanaian mother, Eva; in Hackney,London. Determined to pursue his dreams, Idris left school in 1988 and enrolled in the National Youth Music Theater. Around this time he landed small roles in productions such as Crimewatch , and The Boot Street Band; and was still working in a car factory with his father to augment his small income. He soon appeared in various British television series. He played a role in the British television seriesBramwell in 1995 before transitioning to other major roles in series such as The Bill and The Ruth Rendell Mysteries .
To intensify his explorations, he soon moved to the United States, settling in Brooklyn, New York. Elba landed his starring role on the HBO drama The Wire , where he starred as a crime boss.
