Karolína Plíšková is a former world number 1 tennis player who became the first person to reach this ranking without ever winning a Grand Slam tournament. The ten-time Czezch WTA and five-time doubles winner is also credited with being one of the first two twins to win a doubles title together on the WTA Tour.

Karolína Plíšková is the daughter of Radek and Martina Plíšková. She was born a twin on March 21, 1992 in Louny, Czechoslovakia. Growing up, the Plíšková girls fell in love with tennis after watching players like Martina Hingis, Monica Seles and Marat Safin play the game before deciding to play professionally.

Plíšková first announced her arrival on the world stage at the 2010 Junior Australian Open which she won. Her first senior Grand Slam appearance was at Roland Garros in 2012, where she crashed out in the first round to Marion Bartoli. The following year, Plíšková tasted her first victory on the WTA Tour at the Kursa in Kuala Lumpur at the 2013 Malaysian Open. In the same year, she won her first doubles tournament at the Generali Ladies Linz tournament in Austria.

In 2014, the growing Czech superstar enjoyed a breakthrough year as she managed several final appearances as well as a few semi-final and quarter-final finishes. During this period, she also won two tournaments. the Korea Open and the Generali Ladies Linz, all of which helped propel her to 24th in the world at the end of the year.

In 2015, Karolína Plíšková set her sights on reaching the top 10. She started the year by beating former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the first round of the Brisbane International tournament. She then reached the final of the Apia International Sydney 2015 which she lost before being eliminated in the third round of the first round of the Grand Slam in Australia. She then reached the final of the 2015 Dubai Duty Free Championship, beating Ana Ivanovic along the way. There were several other notable appearances before Plíšková could claim his fourth career WTA title at his home tournament in Prague. By the end of the year, she was leading in the final, having managed to qualify for six, but only managing to win one.

Plíšková continued her performances in 2016, including beating the Williams sisters en route to the US Open final where she was defeated by Angelique Kerber. That, along with completing a Fed Cup hat-trick with her Czech teammates and winning the Western & Southern Open, propelled her into the top 5. The following year, however, Karolína Plíšková managed to reach the world number one spot in the WTA following a qualification for the semi-final of the French Open.

Karolína Plíšková’s twin sister, Kristýna, is also a professional tennis player. Kristýna, who is two minutes older than her former world No. ‘as (31) in a WTA Tour Match with one singles and three doubles titles to his name. This is in addition to her nine singles titles and eight doubles titles on the ITF Women’s Circuit.

Life hasn’t exactly been rosy for the twin tennis superstars. When they were 13, their father, Radek Plíšková, was sentenced to two years in prison on charges of tax evasion. After serving his sentence, Radek regained his freedom and was able to watch his daughters grow up to compete on the biggest stages. However, in 2013 he was again arrested and imprisoned for a year.

Karolína Plíšková is married to her TV show presenter and sports commentator boyfriend, Michal Hrdlička. Plíšková confirmed longstanding rumors of her impending nuptials when she announced that she was engaged to Hrdlička during a press conference held during the 2017 US Open. The tennis star claimed that she and her boyfriend, who had been dating for three years before making the decision to move on, actually got engaged at Wimbledon that year but decided to keep it a secret.

The couple then exchanged their wedding vows at a private ceremony in front of close family and friends in Monte Carlo in 2018. It is unclear in what capacity Hrdlička works for his wife, but Plíšková confirmed that the two have a professional relationship and personal.
