Following a tense atmosphere in Omoku, Rivers State on Thursday July 13, 2023, Isaiah Benjamin from Kaduna State has been chosen as the President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN).
In the fiercely contested election held at Chrisdera Hotels, Omoku, Benjamin defeated his opponent, Alhaji Sadiq Moyoyo, by 16 votes to 6.
In his acceptance speech, Mr. Benjamin expressed his intention to swiftly reconcile disgruntled members.
“I am fully aware that some of our members may be rightfully or wrongfully discontented, but regardless of the circumstances, my goal is to lead a stronger and more unified SWAN. To achieve this, I will engage in genuine reconciliation with those members who have grievances so that we can all work together harmoniously,” he said.
“It is often said that power belongs to God and is granted to whomever He chooses. This election is a confirmation of God’s will, and I am truly grateful to all the delegates who voted. I consider this a gesture that I deeply appreciate,” he added.
Mr. Benjamin commenced by thanking God for the opportunity to serve and commended the National Executive Committee (NEC) under the capable leadership of Sir Dr. Honour Sirawoo for establishing a solid foundation upon which they can build with God’s guidance.
He also expressed his gratitude to the National Election Committee (SWANECO) for conducting an election that adhered strictly to the statutes without compromise. He acknowledged that this may have been disappointing for some who desired to contribute to the association’s growth and development, but he urged them to accept it with good faith and optimism for future opportunities.
“I assure you all that my administration, which has been entrusted with the responsibility to lead, will run a government that is inclusive and transparent. We will seek your valuable experience individually and collectively to propel the association forward. As I said during my election campaign, ‘together we can do it’ with God’s help,” he affirmed.
Mr. Benjamin concluded by assuring everyone that he will not disappoint the trust that has been placed in him, with God’s assistance. He also wished safe travels to all delegates returning to their respective states and requested them to convey his best wishes to their loved ones. He expressed anticipation for their contributions and suggestions that will enhance the administration of this esteemed Association,” he concluded.
