Atiku Abubakar GCON, born on 25 November 1946, is a Nigerian politician and businessman who became Olusegun Obasanjo’s vice president of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007. A seasoned political figure, Atiku Abubakar has run for president of Nigeria five times, in 1993, 2007, 2011, 2015, and 2019.
In the Social Democratic Party’s 1993 presidential primary, he lost to Baba Gana Kingibe and Moshood Abiola. In the 2007 presidential election, he finished third behind Umaru Yar’Adua of the PDP and Muhammadu Buhari of the ANPP. During the 2011 presidential election, he ran in the People’s Democratic Party’s presidential primaries but lost to incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan.
After joining the All Progressives Congress in 2014 before the 2015 presidential election, he returned to the Peoples Democratic Party in 2017 to run as its presidential candidate in the 2019 election.

Career: – Abubakar’s career began at the Nigeria Customs Service, where he spent twenty years, rising to the post of Deputy Director before venturing into business and politics. He took a significant step in business by utilizing a loan of 31,000 nairas in 1974 to build his initial home in Yola, and continued to invest in real estate thereafter.
While working as a customs officer at the Apapa Ports, he made pivotal business decisions. Abubakar declared his intention to run for president on November 25, 2006, and was selected as the Action Congress’s presidential candidate on December 20, 2006.
