It is known, however, that he attended Macleay College in Sydney, where he obtained an associate degree in journalism before starting his career. He then became a journalist and producer for the channel, spending five years there before moving to Seven News as a correspondent.

Before moving to the UK to become CNNB’s London Network International Correspondence Bureau, Phil Black was based in Moscow, Russia. Here he was able to report on a number of high-profile stories such as the controversial arrest and subsequent detention of Russian feminist protest punk-rock band – Pussy Riot – and the landslide re-election of President Vladimir Putin. For his reporting on the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over Ukraine and its aftermath, and the killing of an anti-government protester in Independence Square, Phil Black has twice been recognized by the Association for International Broadcasting at the 2014 AIB Awards. It won the awards in the Short News Report – TV and Live Journalism – TV categories. That evening, Richard Quest, a colleague of Black’s, won the TV Personality of the Year award.
