Rick was raised in Bakersfield, California, despite being born in Wichita, Kansas. He initially ventured into off-road racing before transitioning to Indy Car racing and made his debut as a member of the Art Sugai team in the Eagle-Offenhauser. Roger Penske took notice of his performance and recruited him to his Penske Racing team, even with the presence of two accomplished drivers, Tom Sneva and Mario Andretti. In his first season in Indy Car, Mears participated in nine races, including the Indianapolis 500, where he qualified on the front row despite not finishing. Surprisingly, he managed to win three races in his inaugural season, resulting in him sharing the Rookie of the Year award with Larry Rice.

In 1979, his promotion to a full-time member of the Penske Racing team culminated in his first Championship win, securing three race victories and four second-place finishes. Additionally, he clinched his first Indianapolis 500 triumph. However, the following year was less successful, with a fourth-place finish and only one win in Mexico City. Nevertheless, he secured back-to-back championships in 1981 and 1982, notching ten wins in total, yet a second victory at the Indy 500 remained elusive. In 1984, he claimed his second Indy 500 win but concluded the season in fifth place. From that point, his performance began to decline, frequently hampered by injuries. Nevertheless, he managed to secure two more Indy 500 victories, becoming one of three racers to win the Indianapolis 500 four times.

Retiring in 1992, Mears has since served as a consultant and spotter for various drivers in Penske Racing, notably Helio Castroneves, thereby further boosting his wealth.

Thanks to his illustrious career, Rick was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1997. The subsequent year, he joined the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. Most recently, in May 2017, he was inducted into the Team Penske Hall of Fame.

Regarding his personal life, Rick has been married twice, first to Dina Lynn Hogue, with whom he has two children. Following their marriage from 1972 to 1983, he tied the knot with Christyn Bowen in 1986. However, the couple divorced in 2002.
