Roger Ailes (born Roger Eugene Ailes), was a man who can be said to have lived a full life.
Born May 15, 1940, in Warren, Ohio, the septuagenarian’s life boasted diverse interests and varied accomplishments, including writing a self-help book, moving from assistant to executive producer of a TV show. television, becoming the CEO of Fox News and acting as a political consultant for several presidents of the United States, including President Donald Trump.
He was a man who understood the dynamics of power games by saying that he knew nothing and that when we got in the way, he got into theirs.
Ailes died three days after his seventy-seventh birthday on May 18, 2017, from a subdural hematoma.
Roger Ailes’ Bio
Roger was born to Robert and Donna Ailes, the second of three children. He was diagnosed with haemophilia at an early age and had a medical scare at age eight when he was hit by a car and hospitalized. He didn’t let that constrain him physically or socially, as he joined the drama club at Warren G. Harding High School, as well as dug ditches during his summer job with the state highway department. .
He earned a degree in radio and television from Ohio University in Athens where he also worked as a student station manager.
He met and married his first wife, Majorie. There too, in 1960.
Work
After graduating in 1962, Ailes worked as a production assistant for The Mike Douglas Show, before becoming an executive producer.
1968, however, marked a turning point in his career, when he was invited by Richard Nixon to join his campaign. He founded his own company in 1969, through which he advised companies and politicians. Roger also branched out into film, television and theatrical productions, with Obie Award-winning The Hot I Baltimore backing in the mid-1970s as a fruit of this venture.
He returned to the presidential campaign in 1984, dragging Ronald Reagan into his debates with Walter Mondale of the Democratic camp.
In 1988, Roger Ailes was heavily involved in George HW Bush’s campaign, but by the early 1990s he was returning to television. He also wrote a book, You Are the Message: Secrets of the Master Communicators About This Hour.
Ailes joined NBC in 1993 to lead the CNBC business news network and launched an early version of MSNBC. He resigned before the end of 1995 due to conflicts with his superiors. Soon after, he became President and CEO of Fox News Channel in October 1996.
Fox News quickly established its presence in the Wings and used its influence to attract top talent, such as CNBC’s Neil Cavuto, ABC’s White House correspondent Brit Hume, and Inside Edition anchor Bill O’Reilly.
On the business side, he understood the need to establish identity in a dynamic media landscape while providing a “fair and balanced” version of the news. His willingness to take risks, combined with the identity created above, has allowed his network to shape and reshape narratives.
Following the resignation of MurdochLachlan’s son in 2005, he became chairman of Fox Television. Shortly after 2000, he purchased a local newspaper in Garrison, New York, and re-established it as a conservative publication. Roger Ailes also remained actively involved with his alma mater, providing scholarships to students at Ohio University’s Scripos College of Communication.
In 2016, Fox News had a daily audience of 2 million viewers and Ailes was at the height of his career. In July of that year, Ailes’ career and reputation were rocked by a scandal when former Fox News anchor Gretchen Carlson filed a sexual harassment complaint. Several other women made similar claims in the days that followed. Although he denied the charges, Ailes agreed to a settlement with Fox and announced his resignation on July 21.

Roger Ailes reportedly amassed a net worth of $100 million and made around $20 million a year in salary before he was brutally fired by Fox in 2017 over sexual harassment allegations.

He went there a third time and married Elizabeth Tilson (b. 1960) on February 14, 1998. A former television executive, she was the owner and publisher of local New York State newspapers, The Putnam County News & Recorder and The Putnam County Courier.
Ailes had a son, named Zachary, with Elizabeth.
Roger Wings’ Death
Ailes died on May 18, 2017, in Palm Beach, Florida, after falling and hitting his head at his home the previous week. His death was attributed to a subdural hematoma, aggravated by hemophilia, by the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner, just three days after his 77th birthday.
Elizabeth announced her death in a report published in the Drudge Report, saying she was deeply saddened and heartbroken to learn that her husband, Roger Ailes, had passed away.
A 2013 book by Roger Ailes, Off Camera, gave the impression that Ailes lived ready to die, saying, “Because of my hemophilia, I have been prepared to face death all my life. When it comes, it will be fine, calm. I will miss life though. Especially my family”.
