Tragedy struck as the floor of a parking garage collapsed onto another in New York City on Tuesday afternoon, leaving one person dead and numerous individuals trapped amidst the chaos.
The distressing incident took place at 57 Ann Street between Nassau Street and William Street in lower Manhattan at 4:15 pm on April 18.
According to the FDNY, the second floor of the four-story structure collapsed onto the first. The aftermath was captured in videos, revealing a distressing scene of multiple cars piled on top of each other amidst crumbled concrete. Additionally, the exterior of the structure remains intact, but the front facade is compromised and at risk of further collapse.
Reports indicated that people were trapped in the collapsed elevator shaft. Initial injuries have been reported, including two minor injuries and one serious but non-life-threatening injury.
As a precautionary measure, residential apartments and businesses in the vicinity have been instructed to evacuate until further notice.
Christopher Marte, a New York City Council member, communicated via a tweet that “a few people [were] stuck in an elevator in the building”.
Firefighters have faced challenges entering the building, with concerns that it could suffer further collapse.
