Iran has denied any involvement in a drone strike that killed three US military personnel in Jordan. The country asserted that it is not seeking to escalate conflict in the Middle East. This incident marks the first US military losses in the region since the Israel-Hamas war began.
US President Joe Biden attributed the strike to “radical Iran-backed militant groups operating in Syria and Iraq.” Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron called on Iran to de-escalate tensions in the region.
Iran condemned the accusations as baseless and dismissed them as part of a conspiracy to draw the US into a new battle. The foreign ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanani, stated that Iran does not welcome an expansion of conflict in the region and emphasized that Tehran is not involved in the decisions of the resistance groups.
The strike also resulted in 34 personnel being wounded, with eight requiring evacuation, according to the US Central Command. The US troops operate at the base known as Tower 22 near Jordan’s border with Iraq and Syria as part of an international coalition against the Islamic State jihadist group.
Tensions have been on the rise in the Middle East since the Hamas attack on Israel, which has led to a significant death toll. Iran has praised the Hamas attack as a success but has denied any involvement in it.
